England's Missed Opportunity: Draw with Denmark Sets Up Tense Final Group Match

England missed their first chance to secure a spot in the 2024 UEFA European Championship knockout rounds after a lackluster 1-1 draw against Denmark in Frankfurt. This result means their fate will be decided in the final group match.

After an early goal secured a 1-0 victory over Serbia, England once again got off to a strong start against Denmark, taking just 18 minutes to score. Kyle Walker played a key role, winning possession high up the pitch and delivering a cross that found Harry Kane. Kane's simple finish made him the third English player to score in four major tournaments.

Despite this promising start, England couldn't capitalize on Kane's 64th international goal. They adopted a more passive approach, and Denmark made them pay. Morten Hjulmand fired in a stunning long-range shot in the 34th minute, which deflected off the post and sent the Danish fans into jubilation.

England responded positively at the start of the second half. Before being substituted for Conor Gallagher, Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered a brilliant long pass to Bukayo Saka, whose header hit the side netting from a tight angle.

Phil Foden then nearly surprised Kasper Schmeichel with a powerful shot from the edge of the box that struck the upright. These fleeting moments of promise prompted Gareth Southgate to make further substitutions, bringing on Jarrod Bowen, Eberechi Eze, and Ollie Watkins simultaneously.

Watkins quickly made his presence felt, sprinting onto Jude Bellingham’s defense-splitting pass and forcing Schmeichel into a near-post save. However, England had to stay alert defensively. Jordan Pickford made a full-stretch dive to deny Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who later sent another long-range effort wide after intercepting a Bellingham error.

In the end, England settled for a draw, keeping them at the top of the group before their final match against Slovenia. Denmark, with two points, remains in third place.
