France kicked off their UEFA Euro 2024 journey with a tense 1-0 victory against Austria in Dusseldorf, maintaining their impressive record of never losing an opening match in the European Championship (W7, D3).
Didier Deschamps' squad, buoyed by a commanding qualification phase where they dropped only two points (W7, D1), entered Germany as one of the tournament favorites.
Facing a rejuvenated Austrian side under Ralf Rangnick, France dominated early on, with Kylian Mbappe testing the Austrian defense with a low shot parried away by Patrick Pentz.
Despite Austria finding their rhythm as the first half progressed, they missed a clear chance to take the lead when Mike Maignan brilliantly saved Christoph Baumgartner's close-range effort.
The pivotal moment came shortly after as France capitalized on their momentum. Mbappe's cross was unfortunately deflected into his own net by Maximilian Wober, giving Les Bleus a crucial lead.
In the second half, France pushed for a second goal with Mbappe missing a clear opportunity. Austria, however, grew in confidence towards the end, with Alexander Prass heading their best chance wide.
Ultimately, France held on to secure the win, extending their dominant record against Austria to eight victories in their last 11 encounters.
Despite the defeat, Austria will draw positives as they prepare for their upcoming match against Poland, having shown resilience despite losing for the first time since October.
