France Triumphs in Penalty Shootout to Book Euro 2024 Semi-Final Spot Against Spain

In a thrilling quarter-final showdown at the UEFA Euro 2024, France edged out Portugal in a nail-biting penalty shootout, securing their place in the semi-finals for the fifth time in the tournament's history. The tense affair in Hamburg saw both teams locked in a stalemate, eventually decided from the spot as Les Bleus held their nerve to set up a mouthwatering clash with Spain.

Portugal, buoyed by goalkeeper Diogo Costa's heroics in their previous shootout win over Slovenia, began the match with a routine stop from Theo Hernandez's long-range effort in the 20th minute. Despite dominating possession in a cagey first half, clear-cut chances eluded them. A promising free-kick opportunity in the 43rd minute saw Cristiano Ronaldo step aside for Bruno Fernandes, whose whipped strike missed the target.

France's Kylian Mbappe, largely quiet in the first half, burst into life after the break, linking up with N'Golo Kante before curling a shot into Costa's hands. As the hour mark approached, the match began to open up, with Portugal creating two golden chances in quick succession. Fernandes and Vitinha were both denied by France's goalkeeper Mike Maignan, keeping the game on a knife-edge.

Randal Kolo Muani had a golden opportunity to put France ahead, only to be thwarted by Ruben Dias' superb block. Eduardo Camavinga also came close, dragging his shot wide of Costa's far post. With neither side able to find a breakthrough, the match headed into extra time for the second consecutive game for Portugal.

Cristiano Ronaldo, seeking redemption after a missed spot-kick against Slovenia, squandered a chance to score from Francisco Conceicao's pullback, blazing his shot over the bar. In a surprising tactical move, France substituted their star man Mbappe for Bradley Barcola midway through extra time. From the sidelines, Mbappe watched as Nuno Mendes nearly won it for Portugal in the 120th minute, forcing Maignan into a crucial save.

The drama culminated in a penalty shootout, France's first since their victory in the 2022 World Cup final. Joao Felix's miss, hitting the post, proved costly for Portugal, as France coolly converted all five of their spot-kicks. The decisive victory booked France a spot in the semi-finals against Spain, promising a blockbuster encounter as Les Bleus continue their quest for European glory.
