Slovakia Shocks Belgium with Dramatic 1-0 Victory in UEFA Euro 2024

In what is already being hailed as the biggest upset of UEFA Euro 2024, Slovakia stunned football fans by defeating Belgium 1-0 in a thrilling match at Frankfurt's Commerzbank-Arena.

The decisive moment came early, with Ivan Schranz capitalizing on a defensive blunder by Belgium's Jérémy Doku. Just minutes into the game, Doku's careless pass across his own box was intercepted, and although Juraj Kucka's initial shot was saved, Schranz was perfectly positioned to bury the rebound. This opportunistic strike set the tone for a match that would see Slovakia’s resilient defense hold firm against relentless Belgian pressure.

Belgium, led by head coach Domenico Tedesco, seemed unfazed by the early setback and immediately sought to assert their dominance. However, their attempts were repeatedly thwarted by Slovakia's goalkeeper, Martin Dúbravka, who delivered a standout performance. Romelu Lukaku, Belgium's star striker, was among the first to feel the sting of Dúbravka's heroics, missing a clear chance that could have leveled the score.

The first half continued to be a showcase of missed opportunities and defensive prowess. Leandro Trossard had a golden opportunity handed to him by a rare mistake from Dúbravka, but his 25-yard shot missed the target. On the other end, Slovakia's Lukáš Haraslín forced a spectacular save from Belgian keeper Koen Casteels with a well-struck volley.

As the match progressed into the second half, Belgium's urgency grew. Despite their possession and numerous chances, including a disallowed goal by Lukaku for a narrow offside, the Red Devils couldn't break through Slovakia's disciplined defense. Dávid Hancko's stunning goal-line clearance to deny Johan Bakayoko epitomized Slovakia's unwavering commitment.

The drama peaked in the dying moments of the match. Lukaku thought he had finally secured the equalizer, only for VAR to rule out the goal due to a handball by substitute Loïs Openda during the build-up. This decision, though controversial, underscored the nail-biting nature of the encounter.

With this historic victory, Slovakia not only claimed their first-ever win against Belgium but also moved into second place in Group E, trailing behind Romania, who defeated Ukraine earlier in the day. This win marks Slovakia’s sixth triumph in their last eight matches, highlighting their impressive form leading into the tournament.

For Belgium, this loss is a rare setback, marking only the second time they have dropped their opening game at a European Championship. The Red Devils will need to regroup quickly as they aim to bounce back in their next fixtures.

The night belonged to Slovakia, whose combination of strategic discipline and opportunistic play proved too much for a Belgian side that had not tasted defeat in 14 games under Tedesco. As Euro 2024 unfolds, Slovakia's triumph serves as a reminder that in football, the underdogs always have their day.
