Spain secured their spot in the Euro 2024 knockout stages as Group B winners, following a 1-0 victory over Italy in Gelsenkirchen. An own goal by Riccardo Calafiori was the difference in a match that saw Athletic Club's star deliver an outstanding performance on the left flank.
La Roja continued their dominant form from their opening win against Croatia, immediately putting pressure on Italy. Within the first ten minutes, Spain could have been two goals up as Pedri and Nico Williams both missed headed chances. Alvaro Morata and Fabian Ruiz also came close to scoring before halftime, but were thwarted by Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Italy, on the other hand, struggled to generate any offensive threat in the first half. The second half began much like the first, with Spain pushing forward. Pedri missed a good opportunity before the crucial moment arrived: Donnarumma parried Morata’s header into Calafiori, who inadvertently scored an own goal.
This goal seemed to briefly energize the Azzurri, yet they still failed to seriously challenge Unai Simon. Spain nearly doubled their lead when Lamine Yamal’s curling shot went just wide and Williams' powerful strike hit the crossbar. Substitute Ayoze Perez also had two late chances, both saved by Donnarumma.
Spain's victory, though narrow, was well-deserved and ensured their progression as group winners.
